Natural Hair Challenge!

Hi!

So as you all know, i've been natural for about seven months now, and while I have noticed growth, I am looking to retain a little bit more and get better with my regimen. So the lovely Jamila at College Curlies has decided to take a six month challenge that was started by Curly Nikki & Kim Coles which will include me documenting my hair journey and becoming healthier along the way.

Starting February 1st and ending July 31st, here's what the challenge entails:

Guidelines:

  • Drink at least 64 oz of water each day (or half your body weight in ounces)
  • Eat a healthy, balanced diet
  • Take a multi vitamin and other beneficial supplements
  • Handle hair gently at all times
  • Seal your ends every time you moisturize
  • Minimize (direct) heat usage
  • Deep treatment at every wash session
  • Develop and follow a consistent hair routine, tailored to your specific needs and desired goals
  • Document your progress, observations, and frustrations on your personal blog
  • Encourage your fellow curlies by sharing tips, advice, and chiming in on their blogs
  • Have fun and enjoy the journey!

I'm excited taking this challenge and being able to maintain strong and healthy hair. I encourage all of my naturalistas out there to take the challenge. Let's help one another as we continue on this amazing journey! :)

"Can I Touch Your Hair?" - Tales of a Naturalista, Vol. 1

it's been a little bit over six month since i've become natural, and while it has been a very liberating experience for me, i've definitely encountered some very awkward comments from people about my hair. now with being natural, i'm totally open to any questions people may have about my journey, products i may use or why i decided to start over.

but if there is one thing that just grinds my gears is when people touch my hair. [insert angry bbm face here]. yes, you can categorize me in that group of sistahs who are very particular about when others put their hands in my tresses, i ain't ashamed of the label. and i don't have an issue with strangers being curious, but damn, please just look! no need to touch and meddle. alright let me give you an example...

so i'm sitting in a staff meeting this past week, and all of a sudden, i feel fingers in my hair. clearly, they aren't mine because my hands are sitting in my lap. so i start to look weirdly around, wondering why in THE hell someone has their hands in my head. the dialogue went something like this.

curious individual: oh my god, your hair is so soft!
me (with hesitance): uh, thanks.
curious individual (continues to massage my hair): it feels just like a sheep's wool!
me: hehe, thanks...i guess. [in my mind i'm like, WTF?!]
curious individual: you've never felt a sheep's wool before when it's just been combed out? your hair is soft just like that...

naturalista update:: my first twist out!

happy monday loves!

so i decided to do something a little different after washing my hair last night, and that was twist my hair and let it set over night. and let me telll you, the results were FAB!

after i washed and conditioned my hair (shampoo: elucence moisture benefits shampoo; conditioners: elucence moisture balancing conditioner and rosemary purifying conditioner by carol's daughter) i toweled dried it and added a little bit of cantu shea butter leave-in-conditioner to it. to give my hair shine, i also use coconut milk by organix.

the finished twists :)
to twist it, i simply just part a small section with my fingers and two-strand twist it, sealing the ends with raw undefined shea butter. easy, right? once i was done (this took about an hour and some change) i just moisturized my scalp with more shea butter and put my silk cap on.
right after the twist out - so curly!

this morning, i untwisted my hair to find these amazingly bouncy curlies on top of my head! it was simply terrific. again, i moisturized my scalp with shea butter and added the coconut milk to my hair for shine. to add a little pizzaz to my curls, i used a little bit of eco styler gel (the pink kind) and i was on my way.
the added hair flower for freshness ;)

i loved the results from my twist-out, and i think it's great way to re-define my curls and make them look fuller. yay for natural hair! *lol*

what are some of your favorite styles for your hair, natural or not?
