A Dedication to the Black Brotha

i tossed and turned all night trying to find the words to explain how i felt, but ms. angie stone seems to describe it so eloquently.

so to all of my hard working black men out there--the fathers, sons, uncles, cousins and friends...i salute you for simply being you. don't let the media with all of their so-called statistics day in and day out tear you down. keep doing your thing and continue to elevate yourselves, one another and our communities. you've got the power and potential to do great and amazing things, and i just wanted to let you know that i've got nothing by love for you.

Our Time Has Come...What are you going to do?

I know it has been a LONG time coming since my last post, but it's all been in good reason...

I've been completely swamped for the last couple of weeks with rehearsals, school projects and work, but it has all taught me in the process. I had the pleasure of attending a lecture last Thursday night given my Jeff Johnson (aka "Cousin" Jeff) that was sponsored by the National Association of Black Journalists here at Syracuse University and his words were beyond inspiring and eye-opening. I really that many more people would have attended to hear the knowledge that he dropped that evening.

I've come to the conclusion that yes, I do tend to have a short attention for somethings, I'm not afraid to say it. ;-) but when it comes to wanting to change the world, there are sooo many things that I want to do in order to make that happen and I have no idea on earth where to start. So I want to pose the question, "what is your purpose?" While that is a broad question, and many of us have the slightest idea what it may be, just take a second to think about the possibility of knowing. Even if you don't believe in any higher power, you must know that there has to be some divine right in the universe that has created a specific path and destination for each of us.

Are you doing what it takes to live out/find your purpose, or are you simply waiting for something to come along and smack you across the head and tell you, "Hey! I'm your purpose in life, come follow me!"

If it were only that easy...but being in college these last three years, I've learned that sometimes things come much more difficult than others. We have to be willing to educate ourselves in order to make us better. Jeff talked about how his friend Paston Jamal Bryant (shout-out to the AMEC, whaddup! lol) had advised him to read one book a week, just create discipline and to expand his mind. I want to take on that challenge of reading a new book every other week (I've got to work to get like Cousin Jeff y'all).

But I want to challenge you all to do something that will make you better than you were yesterday. Life is full of endless possibilities, what are you going to do to take advantage of them?

my latest, greatest inspiration: rip teddy pendergrass

i'm sad to report that we've lost another r&b legend - mr. "close the door" himself, teddy pendergrass has gone on home. with classics like "my latest greatest inspiration" , "TKO", "when somebody loves you back" , "come on over to my place" and many more, pendergrass was a voice of a generation of what real love feels like. so many artists of my time have sampled his music, and with me being the music aficionado, i knew their inspiration had come from something excellent. mr. pendergrass, thank you so much for your soothing melodies, sexiness and paving the way for the world of r&b music. you will surely be missed.

RIP<3

| bathroom files - brandy sings "a change is gonna come" |

so i've always been a brandy fan, but as of late, shorty has been singing her FACE on these youtube videos she's been posting! a lot of people throw her shade because they think she can't sing, but the proof is in the bathroom sink *ok, i tried*

check out brandy's rendition of sam cooke's "a change is gonna come" & tell me what you think. i'm gonna need for artists like her, monica, and a host of others to go on tour - i would be there front row!

lovely day - bill withers

it's the beginning of november and it's 71 degrees outside....

bill withers soothing voice just lights up insides this morning. while he is talking about his significant other, i'm taking it as me looking in the mirror this morning and telling myself, "today is going to be a lovely day."

i think we can sometimes get so caught up in the tests, quizzes, projects, deadlines, work study jobs, internships and millions of other things that we as college students and working individuals tend to worry about on a daily basis. but i personally feel that it is essential to take time out of your day just to have a calming moment with yourself amongst the chaos. back in the day *maybe about three or four years ago* i would literally drive myself insane if i had seven million things to do on my list for the day. i wouldn't eat or sleep properly, and i would bite the head off of any individual that would come my way.

but fast forward three years and several college credits later, i find myself prioritizing much more adequately and finding time to make ME happy. i love college, and all that fun, craziness and rachetness that sometimes comes with it. but at the end of the day, if i'm not falling asleep with a smile on my face and thankful to God for bringing me thru yet another day - then there is terribly something wrong.

i'm at the point where i want to get back to the simplicities of life - having a good conversation with a friend, reading a good book, writing a journal entry & having the music take me away.

my goal is to have moments like this at least 5 times a week, or more.

continue to live for what makes your heart beat everyday - be happy & spread that joy to others.

peace, love & happiness.

Meet Passion <3

I love when one of my followers on Twitter tweets about an artist they have found on YouTube. And it's rather encouraging when the artist is singing about positive things. Meet Jeremy (aka Passion). He has a number of videos posted on YouTube singing covers of R&B songs, but if you take a trip to his MySpace page, he also has a number of original songs that he has composed himself that are inspirational pieces. I love discovering new music, and since it is #musicmonday on Twitter, I thought that it would only be right to share this with my friends.

Below is one of his original songs "Lemondade". Check Passion out on his MySpace page and YouTube channel.
